It's once again girl power in the Civil Services Examination 2022 with girls bagging the first four ranks -- Ishita Kishore, Garima Lohia, Uma Harathi N and Smirti Mishra -- in the prestigious examination that chooses people for the country's bureaucracy. The top 25 candidates comprise 14 women and 11 men.
Of the 933 candidates -- 613 men and 320 women -- recommended by the Union Public Service Commission for appointment to various services, 345 are from general category, 99 from Economically Weaker Sections , 263 of Other Backward Classes, 154 Scheduled Caste and 72 from the Scheduled Tribes. So far, various services have reported 1,022 vacancies in the central services.
Topper Ishita is a Commerce graduate from Shri Ram College of Commerce. She cleared the examination with Political Science and International Relations as her optional subject.

Garima, a Commerce graduate from Kirori Mal College, secured the second rank with Commerce and Accountancy as her optional subject while Uma Harathi, a Civil Engineer from IIT-Hyderabad, had anthropology as her optional subject.
A science graduate Smriti, who studied in Miranda House College, secured fourth rank with Zoology as her optional subject. Mayur Hazarika bagged the fifth rank.
“I am very happy with the results. My passion is in governance and development and I want to contribute, so I chose civil services. My family gave me infinite support and the belief they had in me despite that I could not clear prelims twice earlier, I am obliged to them,” Ishita said.
According to the UPSC, educational qualifications of top 25 successful candidates range from graduation in engineering, humanities, science, commerce and medical science from premier institutions such as IIT, NIT, DTU, Gauhati Medical College, University of Health Science, University of Delhi, Gujarat National Law University, Jadavpur University and Jiwaji University.
Top 25 successful candidates have opted for subjects like Anthropology, Commerce and Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Law, History, Mathematics, Political Science & International Relations, Philosophy, Sociology and Zoology as their optional choice in the Written (Main) Examination.
The recommended candidates also include 41 Persons with Benchmark Disability -- 14 Orthopedically Handicapped, 07 Visually Challenged, 12 Hearing Impaired and 08 Multiple Disabilities).
While 11.35 lakh candidates had applied for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2022 on June 5 last year, only 5.73 lakh candidates actually appeared in the examination. Of this, 13,090 candidates qualified for appearance in the Written (Main) Examination which was held in September last year and 2,529 qualified for the final personality test.
In the Civil Services Exam 2021, 685 candidates were selected and three girls had topped the recruitment exam.
A statement said the UPSC has a “Facilitation Counter” in its campus. Candidates can obtain any information/clarification regarding their examinations/recruitments on the working days between 10 AM to 5 PM in person or over telephone 011-23385271/23381125/23098543.
Result will also be available on the UPSC website. Marks will be available on the website within 15 days from the date of declaration of result.
